When Sweet Nostalgia Meets Nature...

Hi Reader,

When it comes to answering icebreaker questions, I tend to freeze up.

If you were an animal, what animal would you be, and why?

A bit of anxiety starts to creep in.

If you had a million dollars, what would you do with it, and why?

How can I ensure I’ll go last in this circle of people?

What's something people might be surprised to know about you?

If you could live in any time period — past or present, when would you live, and why?

I never feel witty enough to come up with something clever on the spot, and typically resort to coming up with a deep, thoughtful answer…

Thoughts of what I could say race around in my mind, followed by all possible outcomes in the room. I’m a classic overthinker, after all.

That is, unless the question happens to be, “What’s your favorite place, and why?”

No anxiety. No racing thoughts. No overanalyzing.

Instead, I’m immediately transported to a crackling fire against the backdrop of a blue-sky pond. I hear the distant calls of the loons echoing across the water. The fresh air brings rejuvenation into every cell of my body. I’m at my favorite place.

I’m camping. I’m camping at Ricker Pond.

Growing up, my family spent many summer camping trips at Ricker Pond. Located in the Groton State Forest of Vermont, this special place has always been what I needed it to be — and more. It’s been a quiet place of refuge, rest, exploration, connection, and inspiration — a place I can retreat to and find peace, regardless of what’s going on in my life.

It’s a place filled with magical childhood memories. Hot cocoa mornings. Climbing the big rock. Swimming. Canoeing over to the dam and walking out to the peninsula.

Evenings around the campfire, roasting marshmallows, and poking coals. Taking turns telling stories while tucked in our sleeping bags — all five in a row.

Hiking up Owl’s Head and foraging for wild blueberries. Being the first to spot the one-legged mallard who lived at Ricker Pond. Hiding under the tarp and playing board games, while listening to the pitter-patter of rain. Eating my dad’s signature egg McJohnson breakfast sandwiches which was always the best thing I'd ever ever tasted.

Just being outside, surrounded by life and wonder. Being together.

Returning to Ricker Pond as an adult carries a rich sense of nostalgia and calm.

I settle into my best self when I’m there. Away from the world of technology, emails, Zoom meetings, tight schedules, busyness, and noise — away from all that seems to shape the modern person, I actually feel more human. Living outside, surrounded by dirt, trees, and wildlife, I feel alive and rejuvenated. Connected. Grounded. Strengthened. Inspired.

It’s as if the fog is lifted from the deepest corners of my mind, and I’m able to think clearly.

No clock to tell me it’s time to go here or there.

No deadlines looming over me.

Only the rhythms of nature, as it was meant to be.

Sunrise, sunset. And all the beautiful moments in between.

I recently had the honor of being published in one of my favorite magazines: Bella Grace. I’m truly humbled and thrilled to have my piece, “The Magic of Autumn Camping” featured in this year’s autumn issue of Bella Grace.

It was a dear co-worker and friend who first introduced me to Bella Grace and said, “This is the magazine for you!” (Shout out to Deb — thank you!)

Since then, I’ve looked forward to every new issue, relishing the joy, comfort, and wonder Bella Grace has brought to every season. If you’re looking to slow down, find beauty, and be inspired, I encourage you to pick up a copy of Bella Grace at your local Barnes & Noble or by visiting Bella Grace’s website here.

Thank you for being here, Reader.

What's your favorite place, and why? I'd love to hear from you!

Wishing you a restful weekend, whatever that may look like for you at this time: quiet moments curled up with a book, adventure and exploration, connecting with a loved one, trying a new recipe, snuggling with a pet, or getting outside to experience nature...

With gratitude and love,

P.S. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me directly — I'd love to hear from you. Introduce yourself and share a bit about your favorite place. Simply reply to this email, and your message will go directly to my inbox.
