Savoring the Sweetness of Summer

Hi friend,

It's always about this time of the year when I find myself longing for autumn. Like someone eagerly waiting for a letter to arrive in the mail, I rush outside to see if today will be the day — disappointed when it's still warm and sunny.

It sounds silly to say it out loud...

And yet, come late autumn, I'll once again find myself checking the mailbox, wondering if today when be the day when fresh snow is finally delivered.

Is there a piece of us that's always longing for what's new? ... eager to rush through once season and jump into the anticipated joys of the next?

Life moves quickly on its own — it certainly doesn't need our help. And yet even when schedules change, new schools year begin, new commitments come about, the little gifts of summer are still to be found, sprinkled throughout each day.

The natural world around us isn't ready to move on just yet...

So, how can we find ways to still savor the sweetness of summer?

Stop and smell the roses, as they say.

  • Listen to the crickets and look for fireflies.
  • Notice the varying shades of green in the leaves as they move with the wind.
  • Taste the sweet freshness of vegetables picked from the garden.
  • Watch the butterflies and bees bustle from flower to flower.
  • Enjoy community around the campfire.
  • Pause for a moment to let the warmth of the sun wrap around you.
  • Take in every color, every movement, every sound.

If you find yourself rushing into autumn, I encourage you to pause for a moment today. There are treasures still to be found in this season.

Sun beaming through the leaves of a large maple tree

Hi Reader, With every year, comes a deeper appreciation for summer's slow transition into autumn. I relish the chilly mornings with its beam of warm sun that meets my face and the early fog that quietly lifts as dawn breaks. The tall, twisty wildflowers have turned brown, their seeds like little puffs of cloud, waiting to let go with the next breeze. Leaves fall slowly from the big maple tree, one by one, spotted orange and red. There's something inside of me that wants to join the flowers...

Hi Reader, I hope your week is off to a gentle start — whatever that may look like to you here in the middle of summer! I don't know about you, but I'm sometimes overwhelmed with the fast pace of summer. With morning birds singing their songs at early hours of the day and the heat of the day advancing quickly, there's a kind of motivation to get moving, get going — go, go, go! Weed the garden, before it gets too hot. Keep going 'til the sun goes down — which we know happens much later now....

Dear friend, My goodness — it's been so long since my last letter. Before I say anything else, I want to acknowledge that yes, a lot of time has passed and I'm sorry — in fact, I believe there was still snow on the ground when I wrote you last! Thank you for your patience during this time of unexpected waiting... I stepped away from social media back in April for a 10-day trip to visit family and friends out of state. Upon returning home, I ended up taking more time away from the internet...
